With gas prices at what seems like an all-time high, we figured now is a good time to share some tips on how you can improve gas mileage. Gas prices fluctuate often, so getting the most out of every tank matters. You need to drive to and from work or school, complete errands, and take vacations without spending your entire paycheck at the pump.

Here are tips to improve gas mileage without spending a fortune.

Regular Maintenance

Having your vehicle serviced regularly does wonders for your fuel economy. Regular oil changes help prevent deposit buildup so that more energy can get to your wheels. McCullough NAPA offers 30K, 60K, and 90K maintenance plans designed to keep your parts working as intended.

Take Care Of Your Tires

Ensuring that your tires are inflated correctly is one of the easiest ways to improve fuel economy. Under and over-inflation can severely reduce your miles per gallon, so be sure to set your tire pressure to the recommended manufacturer specifications. In addition to properly inflating your tires, having your tires balanced and rotated will also improve gas mileage.

Use The Correct Type Of Oil

Engine performance has a direct correlation with maximizing gas mileage. If you change your own oil, your vehicle’s manufacturer will specify which type of oil is best in your owner’s manual. If you’d rather the professionals at McCullough NAPA change your oil, we can determine which oil is recommended for your vehicle and keep records for future oil changes.

Remove Excess Weight

The more weight in your car, the more fuel you will burn. Be sure to remove heavy items from your trunk and back seat, like any camping gear that won’t be used in the near future. Roof racks will also weigh down a car and add additional drag.

Change Dirty Air and Engine Filters

Your engine is like a vacuum that sucks air in through a filter. If your engine air filter is dirty, your engine will need to work that much harder to pull air in. Replacing your engine air filter will remove dirt and debris so that more air can get into the engine. Any time your engine can work without obstruction, you get more miles to the gallon.

Drive Smooth and Steady

Defensive driving saves gas! Practicing economical driving habits like slow acceleration, going the speed limit, and avoiding aggressive braking will burn less fuel. Forcing your engine to work harder burns more gas than is necessary. Aside from the harsh accelerating, you’ll see immediate savings if you lower your overall speed on highways.

Make Repairs When Needed

Addressing issues like your car pulling to the left or the right can help improve gas mileage as well. Don’t ignore your check engine light either, as that can hurt fuel economy. While no gadget automatically increases fuel economy, these tips are sure to improve your gas mileage.
