Why Does Georgia Require Emissions Testing?
The Clean Air Act requires states to regulate emissions in areas where air pollution is high. Georgia's Clean Air Force (GCAF) was established in 1996 as our state's Enhanced Vehicle Emission Inspection and Maintenance Program. Motorists in certain counties, including Fulton County, are required to have their vehicles tested at the specified time to assist in air pollution control.
If your vehicle is a 1990 – 2011 model year gasoline-powered car or light-duty truck (8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight rating or less) registered in Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding or Rockdale County, it must be emissions tested.
The three most recent model year vehicles are exempt from emissions testing each year. Vehicles 25 model years or older are exempt from emissions testing.
At the end of an emissions test at our facility, one of our emissions technicians will present you with certificate that indicates the result of your emissions test.
Well-maintained vehicles usually pass the emissions test first time unless there is a component failure that has not been repaired or manufacturer’s defect. Standards have been set to take into consideration the age of your vehicle as well as the emissions control components available at the time your vehicle was manufactured. If your car does fail, it must be repaired and retested.
You will receive one free retest if you return to the original inspection station within 30 calendar days of your initial inspection (Note: 30 days includes the date and the time of your initial inspection).
Keep Georgia a clean and healthy state. Pay attention to engine performance and stay on top of vehicle maintenance. For more information about Georgia’s Emissions Testing Requirements, please visit:
